MEADVILLE - William E. Shelvey of Meadville passed away Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, at his home after a short illness.
He was born July 5, 1919, a son of William E. Shelvey and Anna Hoke.
He was a graduate from Seton High School, class of 1937.
Following graduation he worked at the former Coyne & Green Pharmacy, Roofner Funeral Home and the American Viscose, later known as FMC.
In 1942 he joined the Air Cadet Program at Maxwell Field Army Air Force Base. It was there he married Marguerite Shaffer, formerly of Franklin, on Sept. 5, 1942. Later they were stationed in Florida at the Marianna Air Force Base.
At the end of World War II he held the rank of first sergeant. He later returned to Meadville, where he worked as a chemist for 42 years.
He was a lifetime member of St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church, a former member of Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and the original French Creek Players at Allegheny College.
He is survived by his wife, Marguerite; a daughter, Ann Schelien and her husband, Wayne, of Broadview Heights, Ohio; a son, Charles Shelvey and his wife, Mary, of Meadville; five grandchildren, Heidi Schelien of Garfield Heights, Ohio, Ryan Schelien and his wife, Janice, of Stow, Ohio, Todd Schelien of Raleigh, N.C., Kristine Buysse and her husband, Daniel, of Mechanicsburg, Steven Shelvey and his fiancée, and Jen Uzarski, of North Clarendon, Vt.; and seven great-grandchildren, Ryleigh, Jack, Mason, Kacie, Liam and Khloe Schelien of Stow, Ohio, and Dylan Buysse of Mechanicsburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Genevieve Freund and Lucille Rudd; and four brothers, Leo, James, John and Robert Shelvey.
Friends may call at Roofner-Collins-Warren Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 544 Chestnut St., Meadville, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A prayer vigil service will be at 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday at 10 a.m., at St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church, 353 Pine St., Meadville, with Father Raymond Gramata as celebrant.

Uncle Bill was a fabulous uncle, I loved him dearly. He always had a smile and made me feel special when I was with him. We will all miss him terribly. Love you Willy, save me a place up there where you are. Love and sympathy to my special Aunt Maggie and all the family.
Charlie and Mary, we are so very sorry to hear about the loss of your father/father-in-law. We know that he was a very wonderful man and loved dearly by his family. we are in Florida so will be unable to attend the funeral but our thoughts and prayers are with you. Love, Gene and Kathy
