Thomas James Peters
Thomas James Peters, 78, of 20653 Baird Ave., passed away Friday, Oct. 24, 2008, at Wesbury United Methodist Community.
He was born June 13, 1930, in Rimersburg, Pa., son of Mary M. and Floyd B. Peters.
He married Frances E. Hoffman Dec. 22, 1955, in Augusta, Ga. She preceded him in death on June 21, 1997.
Thomas had three varied careers as a member of the military, an educator and, most recently, a legal assistant for probating estates. He served in the 2nd Infantry Division during the Korean Conflict and later as the Commanding Officer of Company B 112th Infantry located in Meadville. As an educator, he taught social studies at Meadville Area Senior High School and sociology at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Jim founded and directed the Crawford County Federal Programs Consortium and served as a special assistant for the Commissioner of Basic Education in Pennsylvania.
He is survived by his beloved daughter, Mary Lynne Peters, choral director at Meadville Area Middle and Senior High School; two sisters, Gretchen Barth and her husband, George, of North Hills, Sondra Curth and her husband, David; and a brother, William F. Peters and his wife, Linda, of Meadville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held at Roofner Collins Funeral Home, 544 Chestnut St., Meadville, today from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 870 Diamond Park, Meadville, Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Father Victor J. Kinnunen and Joanna McDermot, deacon, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, Mr. Peters and the family asked that donations be made to the Crawford Central Instrument Donation Fund, Instructional Support Center, 11280 Mercer Pike, Meadville, PA 16335, to the attention of Guy O'Neil, business manager; or to Hospice of Crawford County, 464 Pine St., Meadville, PA 16335.
