Robert Thomas Smith Sr.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert Thomas Smith, Sr., age 84, who left us on June 9, 2026, at Crawford County Care Center in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Robert was born on December 17, 1941, in Chester, PA, to Clyde and Eva Leach Smith.

Robert attended Patten School near Hershey and further pursued his education at Alliance College, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering. He dedicated many years of his life to working as an engineer in the furnace manufacturing industry, showcasing his talents and commitment to his craft, including obtaining several patents for his own manufacturing designs.

A proud veteran, Robert served in the U.S. Marines from 1959 to 1963, demonstrating courage and dedication to his country. His tours of duty included Okinawa, Vietnam, Cuba, and the Mediterranean Sea. Beyond his professional achievements, he was known for his love of life, enjoying hunting, football, and golfing with friends and family. He was an avid Eagles fan.

Robert is survived by his son, Robert Smith Jr. (Jeanne) of Meadville; his three daughters, retired US Army Colonel Kimberly Smith of Washington, Tami Davis (Danny) of Virginia, and Melissa Doughty (George) of Meadville; as well as four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren who brought him endless joy. He is also survived by two sisters, Patricia Temple of Chester, PA and Myrna Wilbank of Morton, PA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Rhonda Smith, his brother, George Smith of Kentucky, and his wife, Margaret McSparren of Elizabethtown, PA. (and two ex-wives, Judith (Stein) Smith and Helen (Anthony) Smith, both of Meadville, PA)

In honoring Robert’s memory, we will gather for private services to celebrate his life and the love he shared with all of us.
