Mervin W. Troyer

Mervin W. Troyer, who recently celebrated his 89th birthday, passed peacefully in his home on his beloved farm on Friday September 18, 2026. Merv’s final moments were spent enjoying an amazing view of a bountiful crop in sun-soaked fields in the loving presence and care of his wife of many years Karen.

Born on September 3, 1937 in Corry, PA to the late Dan and Della (Stutzman) Troyer who instilled in him the life-long traits of hard work, living a life of faith and serving the Lord by loving those around him as best he could. He was a life-long member of the Beaverdam Mennonite Church.

Mervin was a 1955 graduate of Union City High School. He was a member of both the football and wrestling teams, while still fulfilling his duties on the family farm. In football he teamed with older brother Norm to make up the dynamic duo of “Swervin’ Mervin and Stormin’ Norman” leading the Bears to a number of wins from their running back positions. Merv served as class president and in one infamous incident even the self-appointed Superintendent by cancelling school in the winter with a phone call to the TV station the night before as a storm set in, a roll he only admitted to years after graduation.

Merv’s entire working life was devoted to his family farm and the gravel business he started in the 1970s. Merv ran Troyer’s Farm Dairy for decades, proudly producing, processing and selling his own milk all right on the farm with the help of his family and many employees who became friends. He so fondly remembered all those years of “working with so many great people.” Not one to sit idle Merv also ran Merv Troyer Sand and Gravel and later in life became rather famous for his escapades in delivering gravel with some “vintage” equipment.

Merv loved his communities of Union City and Spartansburg. He served as proud member of the Lions Club, was a fixture at Union City Bears sporting events with good friends Chuck and Larry, and late in life was able to play an important part in supporting the development of a recreational rail-trail currently being developed to connect the two communities and provide a place for health and outdoor recreation.

Merv was an avid cyclist and runner who participated in a number of races as far away as Utah and Indiana. Merv also was well known in the Quad Games, where he also tolerated the ski and survived the swim, often under the close supervision of a lifeguard or family member.

Merv had a fantastic sense of humor and strong sense of devotion. His many life-long friends are proof of that as was the fact he never lost faith that “this is the year the Brown’s win it all!”

Surviving Merv are his wife of many years Karen, who so lovingly cared for him in his final months, his three sons Todd (and wife Lisa) of Cranberry Township, Matt of Union City and Greg, also of Union City. Merv was further survived by his three grandchildren Nicholas (wife Marcy, and children Dominick and Angelina), Lindsay (children Dylan and Kellen) and Willow. This generation brought him such joy as they grew in to interesting, productive and respectful adults.

Merv was preceded in death by his parents Dan and Della, his brothers Duanne, Clifford and Cletus and most recently sister Laura Lee (Troyer) Martin. His surviving family takes such great joy in knowing he is again with them all in Eternal Salvation in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Friends will be received in a celebration of his life from 5 to 7PM on Thursday September 24 at the Warren-Glenn Funeral Home, 62 S. Main Street, Union City, PA. Funeral Services will be held at 11am on Friday, September 25 at the Crossroads Fellowship, 17721 Route 89, Corry, PA. Pastor Randy Carr will lead the celebration, with internment at the Beaverdam Lawn Cemetery. A meal in honor of Merv will occur immediately after at Crossroads Fellowship in the basement social hall.
