February 26, 1960 ~ March 9, 2022

Born in: Franklin, Pennsylvania

Martha J. Mewes, 62, of Franklin passed away on Wednesday, March 9, 2022 at her home surrounded by family and friends. Her husband, Michael Mewes, has written a letter for us. Martha has moved on. I have been walking her home for a very long time. She has arrived at that place where we can strip off our body like a shoe that has become too tight. Ah! What a wonderful feeling. Along the way we have done everything, fulfilled every dream we could think of, and some we couldn't have imagined. No regrets. Her wish was that her remains be donated to the Department of Applied Forensic Sciences Mercyhurst University. Having been a teacher all her life, she wanted to continue educating after she was gone. And so she shall. She has certainly made me more mindful and patient, with myself and others, than I could have ever become on my own. And for that I am forever grateful. Instead of a service or viewing, I am thinking of coming together to celebrate Martha's journey sometime later this year. If you would like to join me at that time, please send a short note to Michael Mewes c/o Gardinier-Warren Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc. 1315 Chestnut Street Franklin, PA 16323 Should you feel like making a small donation in Martha's memory I suggest the Forensic Anthropology Center. You may contact them at the College of Arts and Sciences Development Office at (865)974-2365, or via email at asdevelopment@utk.edu Or Mercyhurst University. 8. Michael,

I spent many hours with Martha at the Franklin Y over several years while she was able to exercise. We spent time in the pool refining her swimming strokes. I found her personality to be bubbling and her joy of life to be refreshing. She was persistent in living her life to the fullest and was a good friend. My condolences for your loss.

  9. Michael, Thinking of you at this time of loss. I knew Martha as a young teacher and I will remember her fondly. Your letter was beautiful.

  10. Dear Michael,
Martha was your harbor light that drew you to a home across an ocean.
Your life together was warm and bright, a hearth that beckoned friends to draw near, just to warm ourselves.
A light in the darkness, we always walked away with smiles, having been, momentarily, small satellites around a glowing star.
    You were beautiful together.
I lived vicariously through your adventures on distant lands and across many oceans.
And now she waits, again a harbor light,
Who will lead you to more adventures
When you cast your boat from shore,
And sail out west, into the setting sun.
She will lead you home again.

Buddha says, “Happiness is a journey, not a destination.” And you and Martha journeyed well.

  19. Thank you Mike for such a heart warming tribute to Martha…she was – and is amazing! As her first cousin I experienced Martha the teacher before either of us were old enough to go to school. We lived in Kansas and would come “home” to PA for Christmas and on summer vacations. My older brother and Seth would go exploring in the woods…but I along with an assortment of dolls and stuffed animals were often found in Martha’s classroom! Thanks for the wonderful memories dear cousin! We’ll meet again…Daniel McKenrick
