Louis "Butch" Robert Merkle

Louis “Butch” Robert Merkle, at the age of 87, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on March 30, 2026, in Chesapeake, VA. Butch was born on January 26, 1939, in West Hickory, PA, to Harold L. Merkle and Madolyn F. (Cook) Merkle.

Butch dedicated 31 years to General Electric in Erie before enjoying his well-earned retirement. He also proudly served in the United States Army National Guard from 1956 to 1963.

Butch married the love of his life, Agnes Mae Estok, on February 15, 1958. Together, they created a beautiful life filled with love and laughter, raising seven children who will forever cherish their memories together. Butch was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who always put his family first.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Agnes; daughters, Renee L. Ganster (Scott) of Union City and Sue Van Tassel of East Point, MI; sons, Richard L. Merkle of Kane, PA, Robert J. Merkle (Christine) of Chesapeake, VA, Russell L. Merkle (Tonya) of York, SC, and Wayne C. Cross (Joannie) of Magnolia, TX; as well as fifteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Helen Ann Turner (Carl) of McKean, PA, sister-in-laws, Shirley (Joe) Estok of Milford, PA, Esther and John McMillen of Lake City, PA, and Gloria (Eddie) Estok of Grand Ridge, FL, and many nieces and nephews.

Butch was preceded in death by his parents, two daughters, Robin L. Merkle, in 1959 and Rebecca L. Merkle in 2019; a son, Roger L. Merkle, in 1963; a grandson, Frankie Merkle, in 2001; and siblings Donald L. (2006), James A. (2004), Kenneth E. (2003), Harold D. (1956), Marilynn J. Dudas (2020), and Norma J. Cross (2006).

A graveside service will be held Thursday, April 9th at 1:00 PM at Evergreen Cemetery, with Father Thomas Suppa, officiating.

Butch will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His legacy of love and dedication to family will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
