Resided in: Cochranton, Pennsylvania

Joseph Leroy Free, affectionately known as “Cool Joe,” 85, of Cochranton, passed away peacefully at home on July 9, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on November 20, 1940, in Meadville, he was the son of the late Joseph H. Free and Ann Yursic Free. On July 1, 1967, he married the love of his life, Sally Leigh Walton. Together they shared 52 wonderful years of marriage before Sally’s passing in 2019.

Joe proudly served his country in the U. S. Army as a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division, where he specialized in engineering. Following his military service, he built a career spanning several decades. He was employed by Talon, Inc. for 18 years, later worked for Hemscheidt America Corporation in Pittsburgh, and concluded his career with Diamond Custom Homes, Inc. in Washington, PA. Through his strong work ethic, he earned the respect of colleagues and friends alike.

He was a social and outgoing man who enjoyed being involved in a variety of local clubs. An avid outdoorsman, he found great joy in hunting, fishing, boating, camping, and water skiing. His competitive spirit shone through in everything he did, from horseshoes, softball, and bowling to card and board games shared with family and friends. He loved spending time riding his side-by-side and trike and never passed up an opportunity to try his luck at the casino. He took pride in tending his garden and spent countless hours canning. Known for his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor, he brought laughter to those around him and was always ready with a joke to brighten someone’s day.

Above all else, Joe treasured the time he spent with his family and friends. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his daughter, Sonya Whitbred and her husband, Will, of Maryland; his beloved grandsons, Owen and Ethan Whitbred, also of Maryland; and his siblings, Betty Rissel, William L. Free (Roxanne), John H. Free, Paul T. Free (Doris), and Douglas J. Free.

In addition to his parents and his beloved wife, Sally, Joe was preceded in death by his son, Joseph “Little Joe” Free; and his siblings, Barbara J. Kustes, Patricia E. Walls, Charles E. Free, and David R. Free.

As per Joe’s wishes, cremation was chosen, and no public services will be held. A celebration of life will be announced and held at a later date. Arrangements are in the care of Ryan M. Warren Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 544 Chestnut Street, Meadville, PA.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Aseracare Hospice, especially Aslan, for the compassionate care, kindness, and support they provided to Joe and his loved ones during his final days.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the veteran’s organization of one’s choice in Joe’s honor.
