John W. Alloway of Merchantville, NJ and Marble, PA died Wednesday, September 30, 2009. Mr. Alloway was the founder of Alloway Funeral Home in Merchantville, NJ and a retired locomotive engineer with the Conrail and Amtrak railroads. He was a graduate of Camden Catholic High School Class of 1954 and Eckels college of Mortuary Science. He was also active in many civic and fraternal organizations that included being a charter member of and first Grand Knight of St. Peter's Council #6735, a charter member of Bishop J.J. McCarthy Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, an usher at St. Peter's Church, a Merchantville Democratic Committeeman, a member of the Conrail Safety Committee, and a past member of the Ferko String band and Niagara Fire Company. He was the beloved husband of the late Elizabeth McKernan. He is survived by three daughters, Mary Elizabeth Spitz and husband Dr. Frank, Rosemary Brooker and husband, Dr. David, and Regina McGrail and husband, Dr. William; one son, John N. Alloway; two brothers, Joseph and Charles; one sister, Marie Reinholt; 10 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing 4 to 8 Sunday at Alloway Funeral Home, 315 E. Maple Ave., Merchantville, NJ. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 11:00 AM at St. Peter Church, 43 W. Maple Ave., Merchantville, NJ. A memorial mass will be held at St. Michael's Church in Fryburg and will be announced at a later date. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. The family respectfully suggests mass cards or donations to St. Peter's Church or St. Mary's Catholic Home, 210 St. Mary's Drive, Cherry Hill, NJ 08003 to be made in John's memory.
