John V. Boughner

John V. Boughner, 81, of 1011 Oak St., Reno, died unexpectedly on June 2, 2010 at UPMC Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh. Born on March 24, 1929, in Canal Township, he was the son of the late Thomas W. and Gladys Baker Boughner. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, the former Dorothy Lux. They were married on December 5, 1947. He is survived by three children, Carolyn Corbin of Franklin, John T. Boughner of Hannaville, and Jay Boughner and his wife, Joie, of Tallmadge, OH. Additionally, he is survived by eight grandchildren, Brenda Delp and her partner Joe McLaughlin, of Oil City, Bonnie Lindeman and her husband Doug, of Franklin, Donna Troll and her husband Isaac, of Johnstown, Joshua Boughner of Chambersburg, John R. Boughner of Las Vegas, Ashley Boughner and Joel Boughner of Portersville, and Jordan Boughner of Tallmadge, OH. Also surviving are three great grandchildren, Bryant Delp and Jade McLaughlin of Oil City, and Logan Boughner of Chambersburg. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Jack (Jean) Buys of Forest Lake, MN and Mrs. Donald (Linda) Deets of Hannaville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas R. Boughner, and a son-in-law, Charles Corbin. A 1947 graduate of Franklin High School, he was a star football player. One of his fondest memories was that of catching a cross-field lateral from Ted Marchibroda on a kick-off return, and returning it for a touchdown to help defeat Titusville in a key game. Part of his elementary education was spent in a one-room, eight-grade schoolhouse taught by his mother. After high school, Mr. Boughner went to work for Wolf's Head Oil in Reno. He began his career as a night watchman, and eventually became plant manager, the position he held at his retirement in 1986. After retiring, Mr. Boughner and his wife enjoyed traveling, and twice made tours of the United States. In recent years, they enjoyed frequent trips to nearby casinos. He was an avid sports fan, and particularly enjoyed spending time with his many life-long friends golfing in the Eagles and Senior Citizen leagues, and bowling in the Thursday night Junior Merchants bowling league, as part of the perennial champion Witherup Erection team. He also coached Little League and Pony League baseball. He was a long-time member of The Franklin Eagles Club, The Franklin VFW Club, and The Reno Volunteer Fire Department. During his professional career, he was a member of the Oil City/Franklin Traffic Club, and the Tri-City Management Club. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, June 6, 2010 at the Gardinier Funeral Home Inc., 1315 Chestnut St., Franklin. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, June 7 in the funeral home, with the Rev. Harietta Serrins, of Reno United Methodist Church presiding. Interment will follow at Lupher Cemetery in Hannaville. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to either the Reno United Methodist Church or the Reno Volunteer Fire Department.
