  1. Jan used to fly from the east coast of Florida to meet Carol and I for lunch in Labelle FL. He and Lynn would also meet us in Clewiston Fl for Thanksgiving dinner. We always enjoyed the visits

  2. Jan and I were born 11 days apart. His mother met me when I was 2 and living in Cleveland. She brought my great-aunt, Mary Nuhfer (her neighbor across the road in Troy Center) out to Cleveland Clinic and stayed at my home for a few days. Ten years later our paths met again when I moved from Ohio to Troy Center, where I first met Jan. We were in the same grade, and I had become fast friends with Jorene. I spent a lot of time at the Proper house. We went to the same church and youth group, he helped at my dad’s farm, we took aimless car rides together when he got his license, and we all cooled off at a little swimming hole! Jan became friends with my older brother, too. Most of my memories with Jan were of being teenagers together in that tiny community. I also babysat for his son when he was a toddler. Jan would quietly bring him into my house near Union City and place little Eric, still asleep, in bed with me. He’d then drive to classes in Erie.

As adults, we saw each other infrequently over the years, but met up again a couple of times in FL and at weddings, his mother’s 100th birthday party, and sadly, at funerals.

Jan was a sweet soul. I can’t believe he’s gone, and that all those years went by so quickly.

My sincere condolences to his whole family.

  3. Dear Heather and Eric. Sorry for the loss of your father. Although I did not know your father, I know he had two wonderful children and it was a pleasure to have had you as students at Maplewood . He had to be very proud of you and has left great memories to live in your hearts forever. God bless all your family
