Jack Vardaro, 82, of 455 Chestnut St., Meadville, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at Meadville Medical Center.He was born on May 19, 1927, at Meadville, a son of the late Thomas and Martha DeCrapio Vardaro. He married Virginia Bowes on Oct. 17, 1953. She preceded him in death on May 9, 1991.He was a member of St. Agatha Catholic Church, Meadville. He was a 1946 graduate of Meadville High School, and was a member of the Italian Civic Club and Sertoma Club of Meadville, and Station 4 of Cochranton.He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran, having served during World War II.He retired from Channellock after 30 years.He was a member of the Zogas fast-pitch softball team, and he played as first baseman on the 1954 State Champion team. He was an outstanding softball player and coach. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania State Softball Hall of Fame in l979. He was coach of a women's softball team for many years, and had coached the women's Snooty Fox softball team. He was coordinator of the Western Crawford County Bowling Association Team and an avid bowler. He enjoyed golf and was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Browns as well as a Notre Dame fan. He was a former committee member of the Meadville Area Sports Banquet. He enjoyed spending time with his family.Surviving is a daughter, Martha Pedersen and her husband, Craig, of Cochranton; two grandchildren, Bradley Pedersen of Jefferson Hills and Michael Pedersen of Jefferson Hills; nieces and nephews, Mary Scholz and her husband, Jim, of Conneaut Lake, Thomas Vardaro and his wife, June, of Eddison, N.J., Fiore Bergamasco and his wife, Patricia, of Cary, N.C., Marlene Daddio and her husband, Anthony, of Meadville, Elizabeth Henrich and her husband, Richard, of Meadville, Anthony Vardaro of Meadville, and Rowana Okun of Bedford, Va.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters, John Vardaro, Elizabeth Vardaro, Rose Galle, Margaret Bergamasco, Anthony Vardaro, Mary Vardaro, Martin Vardaro, Patsy Vardaro, Marie Vardaro, Joseph Vardaro and Marion Vardaro. Mass of Christian Burial, open to family and friends, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday at St. Agatha Church, 353 Pine St., Meadville, with Father Richard Toohey of St. Mary of Grace Church as celebrant.Burial will be in St. Brigid Cemetery, West Mead Township.In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Agatha Church, 353 Pine St., Meadville, Pa. 16335.Arrangements are under the direction of Roofner-Collins Funeral Home Inc., 544 Chestnut St., Meadville.
Martha: I am sorry to hear of the passing of your dad. Many women, including myself, have fond memories of softball at North Street and Lincoln Avenue and all over the state. A good coach and a good man.
