Resided in: Union City, Pennsylvania

With heavy hearts and joyful memories, we announce the passing of Gloria Jean Merkle, who departed this world peacefully at the age of 80 on December 13, 2024, at Saint Vincent Hospital. Born on May 24, 1944 in Union City, Gloria was a beloved daughter to Edward and Ellen Titus Gaines and a cherished friend to all who knew her.

Gloria lived a fulfilling life as a dedicated homemaker. Her greatest joys were found in the simple pleasures of life: curling up with a good book, caring for her beloved animals, listening to music, taking long drives and traveling to new places. Her greatest joy was her family, where she delighted in the company of her loved ones and shared countless stories and laughter.

She is survived by her beloved daughter, Stephanie Van Zandt, and her husband Gerald, as well as her devoted sons, Shawn Kilbane, John Kilbane (Krista), Michael Kilbane, and Stephan Merkle. Her legacy continues to shine through her grandchildren Christine, Steven, Meranne, Drew, Andy, Kaitlin, Kara, Troy, Alyssa, Cameron, Jayden, Brady, and Peyton, along with many adored great-grandchildren.

Gloria was the proud sister of Joanne Hagberg, Linda Hamrick (Terry), and Kathy Thomeir (Bob), and a loving sister to Ken (April), Ronald (Dawn), and Jonathan Gaines (Leanne), a daughter in law Shawnda Caldwell, a sister in law Darlene Gaines. She shared a special bond with her cousin, Mary Anne Hall, who was like a sister to her.

She is now reunited with her husband Neil E. Kilbane, her infant son Troy Brian Kilbane, her mother Ellen, her special aunt, Fran Wright, her late brother James Gaines, her friend Larry Peters, and her former spouse James Merkle. Gloria’s spirit will forever live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.

To celebrate Gloria’s vibrant life, a festive Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. We invite all who loved her to join us in honoring her memory, sharing stories, and embracing the joy she brought to our lives.

  1. My sweet sister.❤️
Jeannie was funny, kind, caring and loyal. She would do anything for anyone. So many wonderful years together. So many wonderful memories. Irreplaceable.

  2. Gloria has been in my life since I was a child. My Mom and she loved to dance and usually held the dance floor down on their own! First, my Mother’s friend, then as another Mother-figure to me. She always hugged me and was happy to see me no matter the situation in our lives. She was always a lady and a beautiful one inside and out. I thank her family for sharing her with me. I will miss her, her wild and fun spirit, and her love.
