MEADVILLE �” Fannie Hernandez, previously of Azalea Drive, Meadville, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011, at Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community. Born and raised in Meadville, she was a daughter of Agatha and Dominic Petruso. Fannie left college in the 1940s to work for the U.S. Foreign Service. It was while she was attached to the American Embassy in Columbia she met and married Gabriel Hernandez, a Panamanian diplomat. Later, they spent many years in various posts while Gabriel was an ambassador. Their only child, a son, was killed in a plane crash in 1971. More recently, Fannie worked for the Panama Canal Zone as a writer for the El Panama (magazine). In 1983 she and her husband moved to Meadville to be among family. Fannie is predeceased by her son; husband; and a brother, Joseph. She is survived by sisters Mae Bradish, Mary Betz and Agnes Ritchey, all of Meadville, Lee Trotter of California and Anne Diemer of Maryland; as well as many nieces and nephews. Fannie’s ashes will be buried in Panama with those of her son and husband.
