Elinor S. Canfield, 93, of 658 Thoburn Court, Meadville, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, at Grace Nursing Center, Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community.
Born April 26, 1916, in East McKeesport, she was a daughter of Montgomery and Nellie Shields Sleeth. She moved to North Richmond Township, Crawford County, and attended the Root School before graduating from Meadville High School in 1934. She went on to graduate from Meadville Commercial College in 1936 and worked for Val J. Leone Shoe Store.
She married George A. Canfield on Aug. 31, 1939. He preceded her in death on Dec. 5, 1996.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, its United Methodist Women, the Wesleyan Circle and the choir. She played violin in the Meadville Community Orchestra, was active in scouting as a den mother, was a life member of Pennsylvania Congress of Parents and Teachers, a life member of Golden Crown Chapter Eastern Star and a member of Crawford County Historical Society.
Her hobbies included playing piano, bowling, playing golf and planting flowers.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Kiefer and her husband, Sonny, of Meadville; a son, David Canfield and his wife, Rixey, of Alexandria, Va.; eight grandchildren, Kevin Kiefer and his wife, Devanie, of Linesville, Kristen Sutliff and her husband, Robert, of Conneaut Lake, Brad Canfield and his wife, Jen, of Harrisburg, Craig Canfield and his wife, Lori, of Harrisburg, Abby Speight and her husband, Terry, of Chandler, Ariz., Nathaniel Canfield and his wife, Suzzanne Lohr, of Washington, D.C., Corcoran Canfield of Washington, D.C., and Laura Canfield and her fianc�, Walker Anderson, of Atlanta, Ga.; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nancy Sleeth of Meadville and Emily Chandler of Pensacola, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, John M. Canfield; and a sister, Alice Swetek.
Calling hours are today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Roofner-Collins Funeral Home Inc., 544 Chestnut St., Meadville.
The funeral and committal service will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Patricia Fuller officiating.
Burial will be in North Richmond Cemetery, New Richmond Township.
