Don Powell Don Powell, a long-time Franklin resident, died at UPMC Northwest, after a 16 year battle with prostate cancer. He was 80 years old. Don was born June 2, 1931 in Coal Center, PA, just south of Pittsburgh. He was the only child of Edgar and Mary Krupka Powell. He was a 1949 graduate of California High School in California, PA. He was a two-way starter and captain of the 1948 undefeated California Trojan High School football team. He and his team were later elected to Pennsylvania State Hall of Fame. He was also selected to play in the first ever Washington County High School All-Star football game. Upon graduation, Don turned down a full football scholarship to serve in the United States Air Force for four years during the Korean Conflict. After his military service, he enrolled in California Teachers College (now California University of PA), and resumed his football career. However, this was cut short by a career-ending injury. It was in the stands as a spectator, he would meet Yvonne Knezovich, who would later become his wife of forty-one years, until her death in 2001. After his college graduation, Don began teaching at Franklin Jr.-Sr. High School in 1959 and taught 33 years of American History and Geography, retiring in 1992. He was also 3rd Street playground supervisor for 23 years, and lead them to numerous city league softball championships. He was an active member of the Franklin Elks Club for 50 years, and was frequently seen exercising in the YMCA Fitness Center. Don also remained active in many community affairs and volunteered with the Franklin Fine Arts Council until his death. Don is survived by his two sons, Dana Powell of Hummelstown, PA, and Dave Powell and his wife, Laura, of Philipsburg, PA; his four grandchildren, Matthew and Marc Powell of Hummelstown, PA, and Rachel and Adam Powell of Philipsburg, PA; and a very special friend, Cheryl Brickner, of Franklin. Don's greatest joys were spending time with family and friends, traveling, and cheering on sports teams from Franklin High School and the Pittsburgh Pro Sports teams. A celebration of his life will be held at the Franklin Elks Club from 5 to 7 p.m. , on Thursday, March 22. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to either the Kirtland Cancer Foundation, PO Box 108, Franklin PA 16323; and/or the YMCA, 111 West Park Street, Franklin PA 16323.
