For the last 15 years or so, David and I talked almost every day for an hour or two. He was my brother and best friend. We started coming up with fruit and vegetable jokes, here is one he came up with that I particularly liked.
A rabbi and his son named Bartholomew went to his synagogue. Barry was exploring inside and saw a door ajar. “Let’s go in here, Dad!” His father shook his head and replied “that room is only for an elder, Barry.”
David recently told me what he hoped it would be like after he died. He said he wanted his spirit to be able to fly around the universe and explore. So when I miss him so terribly, I picture him sitting in a Neptunian bar with his friends and a special beer and telling them vegetable jokes. It makes me smile to think he is not suffering and his spirit is free.
My deepest sympathy goes to the family especially to my step mom, and my two sisters as they were always really close to him ever since we were little. I will never forget the endless memories of all the fun stuff we used to do at his old place here in Pa. The best part was sliding down the slides he had attached to the busses in there little camp area out back. He would always give us kids bread so we could take it to the pond and feed the fish and the ducks that he had. He would always be in the big garage working on something if he wasn’t gardening or inside in the air conditioner in his recliner snoozing. He was a great man and will be missed by many. R.I.P Grandpa Hengle.
David was my “kid brother“ for 75 years and I will miss him so much. He was shy as a teenager oh, but he loved to tease his older siblings whenever the opportunity arose. About three years ago I was lucky enough to visit his home in the mountains of Virginia, where he enjoyed his last days. He was becoming a “chef“ and told us that he was watching the “cooking“ shows on TV. We had a great lunch (prepared by David). I hope that today, somewhere in Heaven, he’s grilling his famous hotdogs for Carol, Patti, Ma and Dad, Bette, Jackie, Kay, etc…. keep that grill “fired up, Dave, we’ll all be hungry when we get there!
I had the pleasure of meeting “Grandpa” (Mr. Hengle) about one year ago at his home in Bland Virginia. Our connection is our great granddaughter ‘Opal Starling’. Our meeting was brief but sincere because we both agreed on our love of family, our love of country, and our love God. I thanked “Grandpa” (Mr. Hengle) for his service to our country at the time of our meeting at his home and I now offer my condolences to his family at this time of loss.
Opal’s Poppie (Johnny Stanley)
