MEADVILLE "Daniel R. (Big Daddy) Hollern, 56, of 488 Sunset Drive, Meadville, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, at St. Vincent Health Center, Erie. He was born July 4, 1954, in Meadville, a son of Richard T. Hollern and Shirley R. Roha. They preceded him in death. He married Mary Jo Wright on Aug. 25, 1976. She survives. Daniel loved spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed playing golf, traveling, cooking and traveling to Notre Dame and Pittsburgh Steelers games with his father and kids. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006, Saegertown American Legion and Taylor Hose. He first worked at PPG for eight years and then owned and operated North Gate Inn for 28 years. After retiring from the North Gate Inn, he worked at Meadville Medical Center. He was a member of St. Brigid Catholic Church. Survivors, in addition to his wife of Meadville, include: two sons, Sean P. Hollern and girlfriend, Vanessa Frantz, of Erie and Daniel (Chris) Hollern and wife, Megan, of Erie; sister, Kathy A. Smith and husband, Michael, of Morgantown, W.Va.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Calling hours at Roofner-Collins-Warren Funeral Home and Cremation Services are Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial is at St. Brigid Catholic Church on Saturday at 10 a.m. with Fr. Mark O’Hern of the church officiating. A prayer service will also be held there at 8:30 p.m. Friday. Burial is in St. Brigid Cemetery, West Mead Township. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Brigid Church, 383 Arch St., Meadville. Condolences may be made to the family at roofner-collinsfh.com.

Mary Jo, my sister, Mary Kay Gomora, just told me about your husband–I want to send you my condolences and deepest sympathy for your loss…I live in Rochester NY and suffered a stroke in March of ’09 so now I can’t drive or else I would have made the trip down. I didn’t know Dan all that well but when I heard you two got married I remember thinking he was a lucky guy; and Sis just told me about your Mom. Stay strong and pray;You will make it through all this!

    We had the pleasure of living next to Dannys mom for seven yrs before her passing. We had the opportunity to meet and talk with many members your family. Dawn and I greatly miss the converstions with Danny and Shirley in the yard. We will continue to pray for you and your family to get through this time of sorrow.
