Stella Szmyd Phillips

Stella Phillips, 97, formerly of 17115 Matt Road, Meadville, passed away, Thursday, May 10, 2012 at Crawford County Care Center. She was born in Kombornia, Poland on January 8, 1915 a daughter of Joseph Szmyd and Katherine Pelc Szmyd. She married Walter S. Phillips on February 17, 1936, he passed away on March 7, 1999. Stella immigrated to the U.S. from Poland in 1930 and was very proud to receive her citizenship in 1937. She enjoyed gardening and flower gardens, sewing, crocheting, fishing with her husband at Tamarack, but most of all her loved her family, they were the center of her life, and will be sadly missed. She worked for 31 years at Avtex until she retired in 1979. She was a member of Saint Brigid Roman Catholic Church. Stella is survived by a daughter, Jane Wilcox and her husband Ronald of Saegertown; a son, Walter S. Phillips Jr. and his wife Pegge of Pensacola, Florida; two grandsons, Stuart Wilcox and his wife Janet of Saegertown and Douglas Wilcox and his wife Laurie of Cambridge Springs; five great grandchildren, Nathan, Natalie, and Ryan Wilcox all of Saegertown, Katherine Wilcox of Meadville, and Elisabeth Jindra of Boston, Massachusetts; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her loving husband, Walter of 63 years, she was preceded in death by her brothers, John, Walter, Adolph, and Ted Szmyd. Family and friends are welcome to call on Saturday, May 12th from 8:30am to 9:30am at Roofner-Collins-Warren Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 544 Chestnut Street, Meadville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated following calling hours at 10:00am at Saint Brigid Roman Catholic Church, 383 Arch Street, Meadville, with Father Johnathan Schmolt, pastor, as celebrant. The committal service and burial will follow at Saint Brigid Cemetery, West Mead Twp. In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorial contributions may be made in Stella's memory to Crawford County Human Society, 11012 Kennedy Hill Road, Meadville, PA 16335 or Crawford County Care Center, 20881 State Highway 198, Saegertown, PA 16433.
