Sandra W. Foltz

May 6, 1941 ~ June 17, 2024

Sandra “Sandy” W. Foltz, 83, passed away on June 17, 2024 at Forestview Skilled Nursing Center in Erie, PA. Born on May 6, 1941 in Oil City, PA, she was the daughter of the late William Tyler and Gertrude (Young) Wilkins. On August 10, 1968 she married the love of her life, Daniel Foltz. He preceded her in death on June 13, 1985.

After graduating high school, Sandy went to Indiana University of Pennsylvania to become an elementary school teacher and was a Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority member. She taught 2nd and 3rd grade in the Union City School District for almost 30 years. She was a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association, the National State Education Association, and the Union City Education Association.

In August of 1991, she was in an accident that resulted in the amputation of her left leg below the knee. For the people who were fortunate to know her, they were not surprised at all by her positive attitude in her handicap. She used her new disability as a teaching moment for her students, “Don’t be afraid if you see someone who is different”. She would use her prosthetic leg as a bit of show and tell for her students. They would get to touch it and ask questions, some would even try to walk with it.

In the winter of 2002, she was chosen to be a torch bearer for the Salt Lake City Olympics when the Torch passed through Erie.

Sandy was awarded the Courage to Come Back award in Physical Rehabilitation by the Sisters of Saint Joseph.

In 2017, she was so honored to be chosen as the Union City Lions Club Citizen of The Year.

Sandy was an avid golfer and was a member of the Union City Country Club and belonged to the Union City Ladies Wednesday night golf league for many years and was lucky enough to get a hole-in-one that she spoke about just a few weeks ago.

She was also a member of Order of the Eastern Star, American Chapter 19 and a faithful member of the First Global Methodist Church of Union City.

She enjoyed many vacations to Las Vegas with family and friends to see shows and eat great food. If it was fall time, you would find her watching Penn State on Saturday and The Steelers on Sunday. She loved her sports.

Above all else, she loved being a mom to her two girls, Colleen Holmwood, and her husband Jon, of Erie and Remlee Lawrence and her husband, James, of Tampa, FL.

Family and friends are welcome to visit the Warren-Glenn Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 62 S. Main Street, Union City, PA on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Funeral services for Sandy will be held at the funeral home immediately after the visitation at 8:00 pm with Pastor Lea Guiney, pastor of First Global Methodist Church of Union City, officiating.

Sandy will be laid to rest next to her husband at Rynd Farm Cemetery, Rouseville, PA.

Many thanks go to Renee from Interim Healthcare to all those from Oakview and Forestview that touched Sandy’s health and well-being.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Sandy’s name to the First Global Methodist Church, Bethany Dinner Fund, 42 E. High Street, Union City, PA 16438.

  3. Mrs. Foltz you were my favorite teacher I ever had!! I did not like going to school in middle/high school but no matter how much I disliked it you were the reason I never quit!!!I had to push through to make you proud. I’ll always remember shoveling your driveway after every snow storm! I’ll miss you

  4. So very sorry to hear of Sandra’s passing . Sandra and her family and ours were together since our fathers formed W & W Oil Company in the 40s. Like a little sister. Always tried to visit when we came to town. Wish we could be there. BTW, we are OES related.. our sympathy. Albert & Anita Wiggers, Texas

  5. Aunt Sandy will be greatly missed. She was a pillar of our family and I have so many fond memories of her.
For as long as I can remember, I always thought of Aunt Sandy as one of my biggest heroes. I was so impressed that her prosthetic leg never slowed her down and that she was a strong and independent lady. I remember when she came into my school to show kids her Olympic torch and passed around her leg to teach them how to overcome adversity with tenacity and humor!
I will always remember our family trip to Vegas and watching her play Pai Gow poker and failing to teach us the complexity of the game!
I also can’t count how many awesome Steelers watch parties she hosted and especially remember driving up from Pittsburgh to watch them win the Super Bowl because we had a tradition that year.
What I will miss most is catching up with her on the phone, her quick wit, and when she was done talking, abruptly saying “Well it was so nice talking to you” and ending the call. I hope we get to talk again one day! ❤️

  6. In remembrance of Sandy, a soul built with wisdom and passion, her kindness still an undying light. Her generous heart guided us through treacherous times, providing solace and strength when we were most vulnerable, especially during our time in Pittsburgh. As a friend and mentor, she was unparalleled. In the hearts of my children and mine, her love finds eternal rest. Her memory remains indelible within us – an enduring testament to life’s inherent goodness.

  7. I have so many happy memories of “Mom Foltz.” She was a bright light for so many of us in the THS Marching Band. She had the best smile and funniest sense of humor. I will always admire how she kept that sense of humor and positive attitude after her accident all those years ago. Colleen and Remlee, I’m sending you lots of love and a hug. Your loss and sorrow are shared by all of us who knew your mom. She was very special.

  8. We were blessed to be able to call Sandy our aunt. She had such a fantastic memory for remembering others and what was going on in their lives. She genuinely cared about them and showed it in special ways. She was incredibly generous and never missed acknowledging birthdays, anniversaries, or accomplishments.
We loved, respected, and admired her courage, resilience, and ability to overcome obstacles! And, she was just always the most fun and loving person in the room to be around! She had an enthusiastic zest for life!
The world would be a better place if we could clone her, but there will never be another Sandy!
    Gary & Denise Foltz

  9. Sandy was a special lady, always so positive and happy. I was blessed to get to know her for many years.
My sympathies to her friends and family.
