Paul James Capela Jr.

June 13, 1939 ~ January 1, 2026

Born in: Corry, Pennsylvania
Resided in: Union City, Pennsylvania

Paul James Capela Jr., a man of tireless work ethic, dedicated public service, and an unforgettable sense of humor, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2026, at the age of 86, surrounded by his family.

Paul’s story began on June 13, 1939, born at home in Corry, Pennsylvania, to the late Paul James Capela and Anna L. Capela. As the oldest of eleven children, Paul learned the values of leadership and hard work early on-traits that would define his entire life.

Paul was the definition of a provider, often balancing three jobs at once to support his family. He dedicated 29 years to True Temper, 10 years to Sears, and over 5 years to the Corry Auto Auction. Beyond his private employment, Paul was deeply committed to his country and his community. He served in the United States Army, stationed in Germany, and later served his neighbors as the Mayor of Union City for over five years.

To those who knew him best, Paul was the consummate jokester. His wit was sharp, his sense of humor was infectious, and he had a rare ability to brighten any room. When he wasn’t working or serving the city, Paul found joy in the simple things: tending to his garden, bowling in his younger years, or cheering for the Cleveland Browns. He was an avid fan of boxing and found his greatest serenity at the reservoir with a fishing pole in hand.

Paul’s greatest legacy is his large and loving family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Jane (Eastman) Capela. He was a devoted father to Paula Jane (Kunzen) Capela, Dawn Annette (Kenny) Ogilvie, and Samuel Scott (Rovena) Capela. He is also survived by his siblings: Charles Capela, Cindy Crocker, Delores Kerr, Milan (Joe) Capela, Kenny Capela, Norman Capela, and Yvonne Price; as well as five grandchildren including Kaitlyn Templin and her husband Grant, Ashley Messinger and her husband Ricky, Cody Capela, Jaime Kunzen, and Ryan Newton and four great-grandchildren Matthew Templin, Lylah Messinger, Claire Templin, Ryler Messinger and many nieces and nephews.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Carolyn; and his brothers, Russ and Tom.

In honor of Paul’s life of service and his love for his community, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Union City Library or the Wounded Warrior Project.

Family and friends are welcome to call on Wednesday, January 7th from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Warren-Glenn Funeral Home 62 S. Main St., Union City. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 8th at 10:00 am at the funeral home with full military honor. Pastor Chad Capela will be officiating.

Burial will follow at St. Teresa Cemetery.
