P. Jean (Chittester) Mong

May 12, 1928 ~ March 16, 2026

Born in: Falls Creek, Pennsylvania
Resided in: Franklin, Pennsylvania

Phyllis Jean Mong died on March 16, 2026, at the Collins Hospice House in Franklin, PA.

Jean was born on May 12, 1928, in Falls Creek, PA, the daughter of Arthur and Lottie Chittester. She was the youngest of nine close-knit siblings and the last to survive.

Jean attended Falls Creek schools, which were located next-door to her home. She began working at an early age and rose to head cashier at Riverside Markets. Jean moved to Franklin in the 1950’s to help open Riverside’s new store. Over the years, Jean managed cash offices and worked in retail sales for several businesses, becoming well known in the community.

Jean was a long-time treasurer of the Galloway Methodist Church and then led its funeral-dinner ministry for many more years. She was also Judge of Elections for Sugarcreek Borough’s Galloway district and active in a variety of other church and community organizations over the years. Jean was always happiest, though, in her kitchen and her home, laughing with family and friends and cooking and baking for them.

On December 4, 1955, Jean married Alfred “Buck” Mong and began 64 years of marriage. Buck died on March 19, 2020. The couple loved to work outside, help in the community, and host large family and church gatherings, both at their Franklin home and at their Tionesta camp. Jean and Buck had one son, Donald, who survives in Franklin.

Thank you to the many fine religious, healthcare, and social-service providers who enabled Jean to live and die as independently as possible.

In accordance with Jean’s wishes, there will be no viewing or funeral and arrangements are in the care of the Gardinier-Warren Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Inc., 1315 Chestnut Street, Franklin. Burial will be private in Bethel Cemetery with Pastor Roy Gearhart of Galloway Church of Franklin officiating.
