Mary Elizabeth Vanderhoff

June 12, 1927 ~ December 25, 2020
Born in: Corry, Pennsylvania
Mary Elizabeth Vanderhoff, 93, of Union City, passed away on Friday, December 25, 2020, at Walnut Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Corry on June 12, 1927, to Folmar Nielsen and Bertha Johnson Nielsen. At age five, her mother passed away. Later her father remarried Winnie Nielsen, who raised Mary and was a grandmother to her daughters and great-grandmother to their children.
She was a 1945 graduate of Union City High School and a Union City First United Methodist Church life-long member.
Mary married Lewis L. Vanderhoff on September 24, 1945. After 68 years, through sickness and in health, for better and for worse, he preceded her in death on April 9, 2014.
She enjoyed knitting, sewing dolls and stuffed animals for her grandchildren, making her daughter's wedding gowns, gardening, and canning. However, her most remarkable talent was creating the everyday moments and special occasions that made memories for her loved ones.
She is survived by four daughters, Maxine Van Zandt of Cambridge Springs, Jackie Henry and her husband Tom of Erie, Jane Carter and her husband Chet of Erie, and Maryanne Thornton and her husband Shawn of Erie; nine grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and a soon to be born great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband, Lewis, she was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Jennifer Henry; a brother, Edward Nielsen; and a sister, Sylvia Irish.
The family will announce a Memorial Service at a later date.
A private burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Union City.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary's memory to the Union City First United Methodist Church Food Pantry, 42 East High Street, Union City, PA 16438 (https://ucfirstum.com/ministries/union-city-food-pantry/)

I remember my dear cousin, Mary as a kind, sweet lady who shared my mom’s name. After my dad died , they visited my mom as often as they could… she loved her husband , Louie,, who was a master carpenter and remodeled their lovely home. Her family was the main focus of her life and she had the gentle quietness of her dad. We used to go see them occasionally and we always had fun with their kids. With my love and prayers..
