Marguerite S. (Maggie) Shelvey, 96, of Meadville, passed away, Thursday, July 28, 2016 at her residence with her family by her side. She was born in Franklin, Pennsylvania on November 3, 1919 a daughter of Charles W, Shaffer and Hannah McGinnis Shaffer. She was a 1937 graduate of Franklin Senior High School and following graduation she was employed with Talon Company of Meadville then later in the office for Keystone Ordinance Plant. She married William E. Shelvey on September 5, 1942 in a military wedding at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama where William was stationed as an Air Cadet. Later William was transferred to Marianna Army Air Force Base where Marguerite was employed by the U.S. Government as a secretary to the Provost Marshal. She also worked along with the military police of the 1068 Guard Squadron. After World War II the couple returned to Meadville where Marguerite worked as a bridal consultant at the Royal Bridal Shop. She later became co-editor of The Meadville Tribunes Women's Page and she was a feature writer. She retired from The Meadville Tribune in 1975. In her spare time Marguerite found relaxation by painting using most mediums as well as writing, crafting, woodworking, upholstering, refinishing furniture, square dancing, knitting, crocheting, sailing, and at the age of 60 she took up water skiing. She was also a voracious reader, a talented seamstress and enjoyed traveling the US and abroad with her husband. She was a former member of Meadville City Hospital Auxiliary, Women's Club, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, the original French Creek Valley Players at Allegheny College and a charter member of the Meadville Racquet Club. She is survived by her daughter, Ann Schelien and her husband, Wayne of Sagamore Hills, OH; a son, Charles Shelvey and his wife, Mary of Meadville; five grandchildren, Heidi Schelien of Garfield Heights, OH, Ryan Schelien and his wife, Janice of Stow, OH, Todd Schellien of Durham, NC, Kristine Buysse and her husband, Daniel of Mechanicsburg, PA, Steven Shelvey and his wife, Kacie of Rutland, VT; eleven great-grandchildren, Ryleigh, Jack, Mason, Kacie, Liam, Khloe, Luke, and Avery Schelien of Stow, OH, Dylan Buysse of Mechanicsburg, PA, River Shelvey and Dylan Winston of Rutland, VT; a nephew, Richard Shaffer of Hendersonville, NC; and her two cats, Sunny and Khloe. She was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Shelvey on January 23, 2011. The family would like to thank Jennifer Weir, Kathie Cook, Charlene Edeburn, Southern Care Hospice, and Dr. Paula Miaczynski for their special care given to Maggie. Family and friends are welcome to call on Sunday, July 31, 2016 from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Ryan M. Warren Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 544 Chestnut Street, Meadville, PA with a prayer vigil service at 7:30 P.M. with Deacon Ken Reisenweber. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 1, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church, 353 Pine Street, Meadville, PA with Father Tom Trocciho, Parochial Vicar, as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Agatha Cemetery, Meadville, PA.
