SAEGERTOWN " Margaret (Kay) Bortner, 70, died surrounded by family at her residence, 21028 Meadow Drive, Saegertown, on Thursday, April 29, 2010.
She was born in Meadville on Sept. 30, 1939, to the late Coyt Henry and the late Ethelyn Wilkes Henry, She was a graduate of Meadville Area Senior High School, “Class of ’57.”
She was formerly married to the late James Hughes and with him owned and operated the Saegertown Dairy Isle in the 1960s and early ’70s. She subsequently married Hamilton (Merf) Bortner. He preceded her in death in 1988. They, together, managed what is now the Canteen at the James D. Bowers Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 169. Kay also served as bookkeeper for the canteen for many years until her illness. She was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary and served as president from 1982 to 1983. Kay also joined the Myrtle Rebekah Lodge 60 at the age of 18, served in many seats there and was a member until the charter was recently dissolved. She retired from Proform Tool after 22 years there.
Kay was a devoted mother and grandmother. She is survived by her children, Charlotte Hughes McCauley and her husband, Charles, of Saegertown, Janet Hughes Bortner and her companion, Lisa, of Cochranton, Bradley Hughes Bortner and his wife, Karen, of Meadville, Dixie Bortner Vance and her husband, Albert, of Albion Ind., Larry Bartkus and his companion, Tim, of Monongahela, and Danny Bortner and his wife, Joanne, of Venango; and a sister, Joan Henry Gobert and her husband, Bill, of Michigan. She leaves behind two grandchildren, Jacob and Megan Bortner; and several stepgrandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was a member of Grace Methodist Church in Meadville.
Calling hours at Roofner-Collins Funeral Home Inc., 544 Chestnut St., Meadville, are on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Ladies Auxiliary from James D. Bowers Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 169 will conduct a service at 8 p.m. on Sunday.
The funeral will be on Monday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Lila Bachelier officiating.
She will be interred at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
