Gene E. Masterson, Sr. 84, of Causeway Drive, Franklin, died at 10:30 p.m., Sunday, August 14, 2011 at Sugar Creek Station in Franklin. Born July 18, 1927 in Oil City, PA, he was the son of the late Oliver and Olive Cauvel Masterson. He married the former Barbara Brown on January 24, 1948, and she survives. Gene was a WWII Era Veteran, serving in the Army for 2 years. He received the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. Gene also served in the Merchant Marines for 2 years and the Army Reserves for 4 years. He was also employed as a Foreman for Jones and Laughlin for over 38 years. He was a member of the Congress Hill Church of God and the Masonic Temple, Myrtle Lodge 316. He was also a member of the Lodge of Perfection for the Valley of Oil City, the New Castle Consistory in the Valley of New Castle, and the Legion of Honor in New Castle. In addition to his wife, Gene is survived by his sons, Gene Masterson, Jr. and his wife, Sally of Raleigh, NC and W. Bart Masterson and his wife, Theresa of Franklin; two daughters, Christine McClelland of McLean, VA and Wendy Roth of Carrollton, VA; two sisters, Greta Foster and Shirley Zakutney; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren. Gene was preceded in death by his parents; his son-in-law, Irvin McClelland; his son, Charles Oliver Masterson; a brother, Lloyd Masterson; and a sister, Germone "Sis" Wimer. Friends will be received at the Gardiner Funeral Home, Inc., 1315 Chestnut Street, Franklin on Thursday, August 18 from 10 to 11 a.m. A Masonic Service will be held at 10:45 a.m. on Thursday. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home with Rev. Susan Evans, VNA of Venango County Hospice Chaplain, officiating. The family suggest memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, PA Division, Inc., P.O. Box 896, Hershey, PA 17033-0896 and/or the Visiting Nurses Foundation, 491 Allegheny Blvd., Franklin, PA 16323.
