Gary A. Young, 71, of Union City, passed away, Friday, July 5, 2019. He was born on November 30, 1947 in Meadville a son of Ray R. Young and Florence I. Peterson Young. He married Barbara J. Shurr on July 31, 1971. 

He was a 1965 graduate of Randolph East Mead High School and at 1976 graduate of Grove City College with a Bachelor of Science in Education. 

After serving his country during the Vietnam War, Gary retired from the United States Marine Corps due to combat injuries received at the Battle of Hue during the first days of the Tet Offensive. Gary retired as a decorated veteran awarded Purple Heart with Cluster, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal, and Vietnamese Campaign Medal. 

He was employed as a teacher with Crawford Central School District until his retirement.

 The things he enjoyed most in life were spending the days with his wife, walking his dog, fishing, reading, but most of all he loved spending time with his family. Gary always had a passion to help mentor young students to become productive members of the local community and beyond. This was evident in his devotion to teaching and coaching children in all aspects of life. Gary was studying with the Jehovah’s Witness, and he enjoyed learning about Jehovah. He is survived by his loving wife, Barb Young of Union City, two sons, Matt Young and his wife Lisa of Martinsburg, WV and Mike Young and his wife Mindy of Union City; and five grandchildren, Skyler and Jake Young, Lucas and Aiden Young, and Kodie Young. 

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Marc B. Young.

 Service will be private and burial will take place in Arlington National Cemetery.

  1. My favorite teacher in high school, not only teaching me academically, but also in life. I retired from the Navy and ran into him after I moved back to Meadville. He remembered me and still made time for us to talk and catch up. His spirit and smile are missed.

  2. Dear Barb, I am sad to hear about Gary. I can still see him walking around the block with his rock I n his hand. He often times stopped at the cemetery and straightened up all the flags. He will be missed by all that really knew him. Take care , Kathy McCarl

  3. Mr Young was my favorite teacher in all the years from kindergarten through graduation (having him for both computer and business classes). Years later i would run into him and he remembered and asked about me and my sister (who graduated two years ahead of me). You never forget the great teachers !   6. Gary, by far was my favorite teachers in high school. We had many quality conversations about life and the Marine Corp. I never made it into the Marine Corp due to a illness. His stories and talks I have cherished and used in guiding me thru my career and life. I hate I only got to see him a handful of time since graduation in 1983.I would ask about him when I would travel back home. Rest well my friend! You have touched many hearts in your time on earth!

  7. The teacher who made the biggest impression on me. Most memorable classes were with Mr. Young, with the most life lessons learned! Rest in Peace Mr. Young – you have the best smile ever!

  8. Gary helped me change my tire one day. He was the brains and I was the brawn. Such a sweet man.

  9. The best pop to my two boys that anyone could ever ask for. He never left my house or anywhere without giving me a big hug good bye. He filled that empty hole in my heart after my dad passed away. Love you always.

  10. What an amazing father in law and grandfather. So full of love for his family and he gave the best hugs. We miss you, we’ll think of you often, and will hold on to all our happy memories forever. Love you.

  11. Gary always included my kids with his grandkids whenever we were around, from teasing to hugs. He was especially sweet to our Lindsey and always had open arms to hold her. He will be greatly missed.

  12. Gary always brought a smile to my face every time I saw him. I will remember our long talks on politics, the marine corp, Grove City, family, and old friends. He had many stories and life lessons to share that always kept my attention. Every conversation ended with a hug and until we meet again.

  13. So sorry for your loss . I thought alot of Gary ,he always made me laugh . We had some good times in class together . We always ended up running in the back of the pack , but always finished . He would always push himself as far as he could . He will be missed .

  14. Barb I’m so sorry you have to experience this terrible enemy death of your dear husband Gary. He was a great guy and friend, we will see him soon in the resurrection.
