  1. Very sorry for your loss…. My thoughts and prayers are with you allβ€¦πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™

    • Oh Fred. You will be missed! I am so glad I was able to see you one last time Saturday. Rest in Power Friend 🎢

    • Fred? Who the hell is Fred? I knew Derf, Fred spelled backwards.

I met him at Clarion University where we lived in the same dorm for a year and then again off-campus for another two. We roomed with a cast of characters where Fred held his own, being as eccentric as anyone else. He was unflinchingly kind while being cynically direct. He had a laser-like professional focus based on a foundation for the love of music. I do not hear Pink Floyd without thinking about Derf and his Salvador Dali posters. He was the first of my friends to gain employment in his field of study and desired area of interest. Like all my friends at Clarion, he was a sun in his own universe with a pull and a force that was uniquely human. I was glad when our universes intersected. I am better for that even though today my universe is little less bright to learn of this news. He was quirky and passionate, he made you feel like you were special and that he was better for knowing you. He was a man of the people and intensely private at the same time. The last time I saw Derf, four years ago, his demeanor, his approachability, his laughter, his aura were all unchanged and therefore was the text-book personification of consistency. What an absolute joy he was!! How lucky am I that I knew Derf!!!

  2. I am so very sorry to hear of Fred’s passing he was a wonderful man. Sending thoughts and prayers to the entire family.

  3. It is always difficult to lose a family member, our nephew Fred. His presence will be missed at family events. Fred, I’m sure is promoting rock stars whom he has joined in the hereafter.

  4. I’m so sorry for your loss. Although I did not know Fred all that well. The few interactions I did have with him left a lasting impression of the impeccable man he would grow to be. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers. May God hold you in the palm of His hands and comfort you in His arms.

  5. Im in shock and my heart hurts.
When I saw you last year, I was so happy to hear that you found a new purpose that allowed you to be your authentic self. You meant so much both professionally and personally.
I’m really going to miss your laugh and the names you lovingly give your friends ❀️

  6. We have such great memories of Fred, from childhood shenanigans to him getting backstage concert tickets for Steven and Laura. Sharon and I are grateful for him driving us back to Cleveland after the corn roast. It was a wonderful opportunity to catch up on life with him. We miss him dearly.

  7. Fred was one of a kind! What a character he was. Brought life into any room. Had the pleasure of working together at WZZO in Allentown. Fred you will be missed.

  8. I am so sorry for loss- Fred was such a kind hardworking person. I am grateful that our paths crossed in the music business. He will be missed .

    With peace and love-
    Amy Kaplan

  9. Oh no, Fred. Your light will be missed. From your love of all things music to the mid century modern era, you always had a fun story, a great laugh and a kind heart. You will be missed by so many. Rest Easy friend.

  10. You were such a sweet, kind, artistic beautiful soul. Thank you for gracing our lives. Rest in peace & beauty.
    Sara & Jack Springer

  11. Fred was the best of the best. I loved working with him and he traveled with us on tour a few times. My sincere condolences to the family and to all who will miss him as I will.

  12. So sorry to hear of Fred’s passing, my condolences to Mary Ann, Melody , Terry and family. He was a quiet, nice guy.

  13. I always loved workingv with Fred at A
&M..He was a true music guy and a superficial guy…R.I.p.

  14. Fred was truly an amazing guy. I’ll miss our talks, his β€œWHAT’D YOU DO!?” remarks, and his wisdom that he shared with me the last 15 years. I’ll miss you, buddy.

  15. This is a light that will be missed! Fred had a warm soul, kind grace, and a big heart. He was filled with love and passion for the music, and artists and radio stations he worked with for many years, and the artists and music fans he loved helping connect. It is a sad day when we lose a great one too young. Thank you for so much love and joy and laughter!

  16. Sorry to hear about cousin Fred’s sudden passing. I have fond memories of summers spent in Union City with all the cousins. I’m glad we got to catch up with Fred in August at the corn roast.

  17. Love and prayers to my sister Mary Ann and her daughter Melody and her son and wife Terry and Tracy on the passing of Fred. He will sadly missed by the family as he always tried to.attend our family parties. With our love, Aunt Rita and Uncle Dave and family. May you rest in peace.

  18. My brother was always very driven and knew as a young teenager that he wanted to go into radio, pretending to be Casey Kasem. He was always thinking 5 steps ahead in anything he did. He was very smart and would think before he spoke. He would say intellectual things in such a matter of fact way that made you wonder why you never thought of things the same way. And he always thought of any phrase that started with “nobody ever…”as a challenge that he would accomplish. And he would make me push myself to do hard things. Although he was a pain in the ass sometimes…I will miss him!

  19. Definitely one of the good ones. He was just a genuinely caring human being. Happy to have been able to know him and call him friend. Rest peacefully Fredder.

  20. I miss you so much already. 20 years wasn’t enough time to know you.

When I had no where to go you gave me a home.
When I was at my lowest you were there telling me how to pick myself back up.
You never let me give up on myself. You scolded me when I was wrong. You were always in my corner looking out for me.
You were the father figure I went to when I’d thought I’d lost mine. You were an older brother encouraging me every day to be myself. You were my best friend.
You were an amazing storyteller, confidant, and adventurer.
    You were an amazing person.
    You were my found family.

    I love you Fred Shade.

  21. Fred was always able to make people smile, always remember the loud and laughing chats around Grandma and Grandpa Lutzo’s table. Prayers always.

  22. WE WERE SO VERY SORRY TO HEAR OF FREDDY’S PASSING. HE WAS A SWEET NEIGHBOR BOY THAT PLAYED WITH THE KIDS ON MURRY RD. HE WILL BE MISSED BY MANY. SO MANY PRECIOUS MEMORIES WE HAVE OF THEM.
OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO THE WHOLE FAMILY.
LOVE, BUZZ AND VIOLET YOST, AND FAMILY πŸ’•πŸ’”πŸ˜ͺ

  23. I remember our carefree times together at the campground Fred! I can still see your face and hear your singing all these years later. Rest well my friend, Mike β€œsunshine” Coburn (nobody ever called me that but you! LOL)

  24. Fred was the highlight of my day when he would visit my radio station in Detroit. Funny, insightful, gifted storyteller. To the Shade Family – sorry for your loss and thank you for sharing Fred with all of us.

  25. Dear Fred, Thanks for all the great conversations we had. There’s a lot I’ll remember about the things we discussed. You were always knowledgeable. Always insightful. There were lots of laughs. Even in conversations about troublesome things, there was a lightness about the discussion…an air that, if there was a wall, there was a way around it or maybe a way to climb over it. What I’ll always remember is your good will towards your fellow humans. You had compassion for others. That’s something we need so much more of today. Kindness. I’ll do my best to remember you by being more compassionate towards my fellow human beings just like you were. To your family…My deepest sympathies. I pray you find comfort in knowing that he had such a great impact on so many. May his memory be eternal.

  26. Fred was a friend, then a mentor, then a colleague, but always a friend first. He was kind, helpful and passionate about his interests. He was also really funny and an amazing story teller. He loved music, he loved the people he worked with and he loved Shark Week. I will miss him vey much.

  27. Punchline loves you, Fred Shade. Thank you for being our manager. You were so generous and you actually cared, too.

  28. I’m truly sad to learn of Fred’s passing, as it was always a pleasure to converse with him at Philadelphia radio stations and music events. He was a knowledgeable and witty music lover, and he will be fondly remembered.
