David H. "Spence" Spencer, 86, of Michigan City, Indiana, passed away, on Sunday, December 19, 2021 at Franciscan Health in Michigan City. Spence was born February 8, 1935 in Erie, Pennsylvania to the late Hugh A. Spencer and Opal G. (Parmenter) Stoffan Spencer-Dunst. Spence married Beth M. Spencer who passed away on October 28, 2013 after 35 years of marriage. Surviving are five children, Laurel Lee (Paul) Smith of Oroville, California, Crystal Davis of Michigan City, David A. (Lisa) Pendragon of San Antonio, Texas, Tami Sue (Michael) Fryman of Pekin, Illinois and Jamey (Jennifer) Spencer of Rolling Prairie, Indiana; numerous loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two step-brothers, Fred (Beth) Stoffan and Thomas (Patty) Stoffan and also surviving are cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends. He is preceded in death by two sisters, Norma Jean Spencer and Shaaron Spencer and one brother Robert Glenn Spencer. Spence was a retired veteran who served in the US Navy from 1952 - 1956, US Air Force from 1957 - 1961; and US Coast Guard from 1962 - 1977 where he received numerous awards for his dedication to the service he was in. After discharge from the Coast Guard he worked for the South Shore Railroad until 1999. He also enjoyed giving boat tours in Chicago and Munising, Michigan and operating equipment at the Hesston Steam Museum. He was a member of the Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall in Michigan City. He enjoyed racing both cars and motorcycles and flying his own private plane. His greatest joy though was spending time flying on vacations with his wife Beth and volunteering his time helping others. He was a great lover of animals and telling stories. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Viewing will be held on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Root Funeral Home in Michigan City, Indiana. Memorials may be made to the Michiana Humane Society or Fried's Cat Shelter in Michigan City. Family and friends are welcome to call on Monday, January 3, 2022 from 1:00pm til the time of the service at 2:00 pm at Warren-Glenn Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 62 S. Main Street, Union City, Pennsylvania. Full military honors will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Union City, Pennsylvania.   4. Spence and I grew up together and got into trouble with glee…through our school years and beyond…he was a joy to be around and we communicated just a few days ago. He flew down several years and we had a reunion..what a time! I shall miss you, Buddy, and know we will be together again someday with Ken looking on!

  5. Dave will be dearly missed! Loved his visits, n long chats about his many adventures in his life! A true gentlemen! We had the opportunity to fly with him in his plane, go on a tour boat he was a Captain of, ride on a train he was engineer of! Took a tour of Chicago. Never missed a class reunion! My sympathys to his family n loved ones. You were all very special to him! He was very proud of each n every one of you! Sending my love n prayers to you all n God’s Blessings!
