Janis L. Fleming

Janis L. Fleming, age 77, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2026, after a brief battle with cancer.

She was born on June 4, 1949, in St. Marys, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Arnold and M. Louise (Mambuca) Reese.

She is survived by her husband, Gilpin Fleming; her two sons, Michael (LeAnn) Manginell of Cape Coral, Florida, and Steve (Holly) Manginell of Emporium, PA, and their families; and her stepchildren, Jerry (Tara) Fleming, Lacey (Mark) Graziano, and Andrea Fleming, along with their families.

Jan is also survived by her sister, Judi (Jim) Boswell of Palmyra, Pennsylvania; her nephews, Christo pher (Michelle) Boswell of Hyattsville, Maryland and Seth (Laurie) Boswell of Mancos, Colorado; her two grandnieces; and her close fire team friend, Chris Rohrbach of Kansas.

Animals were among Jan’s greatest passions, and she loved them all. She spent many years raising LaMancha and Nigerian goats. Nothing brought her more happiness than horseback riding through the mountains.

Jan dedicated more than four decades to wildland fire service, beginning her tenure as a Pennsylvania Fire Warden on July 29, 1981. She served in that role for 45 years. A committed member of Pennsylvania’s Out-of-State Wildland Fire Program since 1998, Jan deployed on more than 100 national assignments in a wide range of positions, concluding her career at the end of the 2025 fire season. She also served on Pennsylvania’s Incident Management Team, responded to in-state wildfire incidents, and supported numerous specialized crew camps and academies. Locally, she was a steady presence at district trainings, where she handled check-in and logistics with her trademark precision and care.

Nationally, Jan was widely respected for her exceptional expertise in wildland fire incident documentation. She was frequently consulted by committees and often specifically requested by incident management teams across the country. In her final years, she served on Northern Rockies Team 6 and was recently recognized with an award for her outstanding service and contributions to the team.

Jan’s knowledge, dedication, and professionalism made her an invaluable asset to the Pennsylvania Wildland Fire Program. She will be deeply missed, both here at home and across the nation.

In keeping with her independent spirit, Jan requested that no viewing or funeral service be held and arrangements are under the care of the Gardinier-Warren Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 1315 Chestnut Street, Franklin, PA 16323. She will be remembered by her family and friends in their own hearts and memories.

May she forever be at peace in the mountains that she loved, surrounded by the animals that brought her so much joy.
