Samuel L. Tate, age 83, of Franklin, died Monday, July 7, 2025 at the Oil City Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

A son of James and Christine Corpening Tate, he was born May 19, 1942 in Nebo, North Carolina.

On August 20, 1960, he married the former Laura Rutherford. She preceded him in death on October 24, 2017.

Employed as a truck driver, he worked for Refiner’s Transport prior to his retirement in 1999.

He was a life long member of the New Life Family Worship Center Church of God in Franklin.

Surviving two sons, Jeffrey Tate and long time companion Shirley Mosier; Curtis Tate and wife Susan of Carnegie; a daughter, Ronica “Sue” Tate of Oil City; four grandchildren, Curtis Tate, Tasia Tate, Brandon Tate, Christian Tate; and three great-grandchildren, Tay’Lynn Rowe, Zariana Tate, Nyla Tate; a brother, Nathaniel Tate and wife Maria, Raleigh, NC; a sister, Minnie Rutherford, Nebo, NC.

He was preceded in death by his wife, two sons, Christopher and Terry Tate and his parents.

Friends will be received from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, Saturday, July 12, 2025, at the New Life Family Worship Center Church of God in Franklin. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday at the Church. Interment will be made in the Franklin Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, 5115 Centre Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15232.

Arrangements are in the care of Gardinier-Warren Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc. 1315 Chestnut St., Franklin, PA 16323.

  1. Rest in peace Tater Bug. Definitely an outstanding man! I worked with him at Refiners in the early 90s.

  2. To the Tate Family. Prayers to you all. Cherish your memories of him and remember he will be with you forever.

  3. I was a caregiver for Sam while he was at the home. Always a smile on his face and loved to talk about his family. Enjoyed listening to the crazy funny stories him and a buddy/old coworker from driving truck talked about. Sounded like they had some good times. He was a good man with kind soul. May he rest in peace and now be pain free. It was an honor to have cared for him. So much prayers and love to the entire family during this difficult time.
