Dr. Edwin S. Gurdjian, M.D., a beloved husband, esteemed neurosurgeon, and dedicated veteran, passed away peacefully at his home in Union City on June 17, 2025, at the age of 90. Born on March 1, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan, Dr. Gurdjian was the son of Dr. Elisha S. Gurdjian and Dorothy E. Kratz Gurdjian.
Dr. Gurdjian’s path through life led him from Wayne State University, where he earned his medical degree, to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital Neurological Institute of New York where he completed his Neurosurgical Residency and served as Chief Resident during his final year. His career in medicine spanned several notable institutions, including the Naval Hospital at St. Albans, Williamsport hospitals, Detroit Medical Center, and UPMC Hamot Hospital. A proud U.S. Navy veteran, he served the country with distinction, ultimately achieving the rank of CER (MC) before embarking on a remarkable career in medicine.
Beyond the operating room, Dr. Gurdjian had a passion for classic cars and was a proud member of the National Corvette Restorers Society. He loved traveling with his beloved wife, Carol Maxwell. Together, they shared adventures, laughter, and endless memories.
Dr. Gurdjian is survived by his devoted wife, Carol, his son E. Stephens Gurdjian, III and daughter-in-law Denise of New Jersey, two grandsons, Stephens and Alexander, his brother Richard “Rick” Gurdjian and wife Jan from Michigan, and many nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Joan Eileen Gurdjian Cox, and brother William Ronald Gurdjian.
