Betty Jean Scott Mong Hayes, 95, of Franklin, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2019 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice House, Spartanburg, SC. Born July 31, 1924, in Mercer, Betty was the daughter of the late LLewillyn Dickey Scott and Marian Dorothy Sopher Scott. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Prior to retirement, Betty worked as the head cook and cafeteria manager at Valley Grove School District for 23 years. A love for knitting and crocheting, Betty made over 90 hats for the neonatal unit, countless sweaters, slippers, hats and glass cozies. For several years,she made bookmarks for the graduating seniors at her church. She was also a part of making a generation quilt with her family who commented she got to see the finished quilt before she passed. Another favorite past time of hers was playing in a 500 card club and playing card games at family gatherings. Left to cherish her memory are her son Steven Bradley Mong, wife Julie, her daughters, Cheryl Kathleen Mong Nellis, husband Rev. Norman, Karen Sue Mong McDowell, husband Gary and her step-daughter Charlene Heckathorn. Betty is additionally survived by her sisters-in-law Margaret Scott, Lois Mong, and Barbara Lewis; her 15 grandchildren and 8 step grandchildren, her 27 great grandchildren and 13 step-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lawrence E. Mong, Jr; her second husband, Charles E. Hayes; her son Lawrence Michael Mong; her step-sons Donald Hayes and Richard Hayes; her brothers Robert L. Scott, Donald R. Scott and her sister Judith C. Scott Steinbiser and her great granddaughter. Family and friends will be received at Grace United Methodist Church of Rocky Grove, 350 Front Street, Franklin, from 2 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 8, 2019. Funeral service will immediately follow at 3 p.m. with Pastor Gary Atkinson officiating. Interment will be held at Sunset Hill Memorial Garden.Memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church of Rocky Grove at the above address.
