William John Barnes, age 74, of Franklin, died Monday, August 22, 2016 at the UPMC Northwest Medical Center in Seneca after a brief illness.A son of Robert G. and Valda Jean Mook Barnes, he was born February 27, 1942 in Franklin.Mr. Barnes had been employed by Polk Center in the Maintenance Department and in the Physical Therapy Department prior to his retirement in 1991. He had also been self employed as a roofer.William was a member of the Polk United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, racing, going to casinos and roofing, particularly slate roofs. Mr. Barnes was known as "The Mayor of the Block".He was a peacetime veteran of the U.S. Army.Surviving is his wife, Nancy L. Barnes; a son, Jeffrey Barnes of Franklin; a daughter, Carrie Barnes-Dunkle of Oil City; a sister, Suzanne Hores and her husband Edward of Groveport, OH; a grandson, Brian Dunkle and his wife Holly of Oil City; three great grandchildren, Malea, Hunter, and Ariella Dunkle, all of Oil City;; a brother-in-law, Robert Keller and his wife Sue of Avon Lake, OH; a sister-in-law, Sandy Barnes of Huntersville, NC; and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Valda Jean Barnes; a brother, Robert Barnes; and a sister, Barbara Booher.A memorial service will be held at a later date.Memorial contributions may be made to the Venango County Humane Society, PO Box 1045, Oil City, PA 16301, or to a charity of the donor's choice.To send flowers, cards, online condolences or for further information, family and friends are invited to visit www.gardinierfuneralhome.com.

  2. Nancy, Carrie and Jeff, I have so many good memories of Bill walking up and down the street talking to the neighbors. When I would go on my front porch to watch the summer storms coming I always looked for bill on the stoop. I knew he would be there waving to me. He is going to be terribly missed around here. My deepest sympathies to Nancy, Jeff, Carrie, Brian and Holly Bill was his brother Bob’s best friend and I have so many fond memories of family get-togethers, card games, turkey hunting and deer hunting days. Bill was there always to help us with whatever we needed. He was always upbeat and always kind to everyone. He is missed.

  4. Bill wil be missed. He was a special person. I will miss seeing the red truck going by me on my walks on Liberty & Elk. When we would meet there was always a good story & a hearty laugh or two. Our family’s thoughts and prayers go out to your entire family.

The Elkatraz Nation is in mourning. We will NEVER forget our trips to Elk Meadows with Sweet William and how he was always “maintaining”. His voice in the dark saying come on Red,come on Red,breath is as clear to us now as the nights that he said them!
