Reading Phil’s obituary brought back fond memories of long ago. I haven’t seen or had contact with Phil for more than 50 years, but two memories of Phil and brother, Ken I will never forget.
I grew up at 29 Russell Street, just a few houses from the Latshaws. Ken and I were about the same age; Phil was about a year older than my brother, Phil. We were all part of the ‘Bleakley Hill Gang’ that also included Dave Hawthorn, Tom Conklin, Jim Bahr, Jim Cowan, and others.
My most vivid memory is the day that Phil, Ken and I were walking along the railroad tracks a little down-river from KickaPoo. We got the brilliant idea that the route back to Bleakley Hill was shorter if we climbed the cliff. It wasn’t easy, but we got about 2/3 of the way up when we realized how difficult the climb above us was. Looking down, we knew going down would be even harder and we likely would fall. I think I had never felt fear as I did that day. We had to press on – and, by God’s grace we made it.
I also tell my grandchildren how we ‘flew’ down the hill behind Latshaw house on “Go-Devils”!

I wish I had enjoyed the privilege of knowing Phil in later years, but we moved to Albuquerque in 1953 and many subsequent moves. Blessings – Kent Smith (rkentsmith@hotmail.com)
