David A. "Red" Long, Jr. David A. "Red" Long, Jr. 79, of Cranberry Twp., Franklin, passed away at 6:50 a.m. at his residence on Monday, October 10, 2011, surrounded by his family and his loyal dog, "Cricket". Born in Franklin on April 17, 1932, Red was the son of the late David A. and Helen Lowrie Long. He was married to the former Donna Sigworth on April 7, 1957, and she survives. Red was a Korean Air Force Veteran, having served from 1950 until 1953, with the 440 3rd Air Base Squadron. While in the Air Force, he received the Good Conduct Medal. Red retired from Franklin Steel after working there for 37 years as a set-up man. While at Franklin Steel, he was the Union Grievance Chairman for Local USW #2229 for 35 years. Red was a member of the Victory Heights United Brethren in Christ Church. He was an active member of the Victory Heights Community League and also a member of the American Legion, Post #476. He was the owner of Long's Nursery, Landscaping, Logging and Christmas Tree Sales. He won an award for the original landscaping at the Franklin McDonald's. Red was a beloved friend and neighbor to many. He enjoyed carpentry, fishing and hunting. He was actively involved raising sheep, goats, and angora rabbits for his wife's benefit. Red loved to eat! In addition to his wife, Red is survived by his sons, David A. Long III and his wife, Crystal, and Daniel G. Long, Sr., all of Franklin; and his daughters, Diana Cotterman and her husband, Roger, of New Brighton, and Dixie R. Becker and her husband, John, of Mt. Laurel, New Jersey. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren, Daniel Long, Jr. and his wife, Darlene, of Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, Nicole Beach and her husband, Robert, of Polk, David A. Long, IV, Jennifer and Jaime Long, all of Franklin, Anna Becker of Mt. Laurel, New Jersey, Angie Jojola and her husband, John, of Beaver Falls, and John Gary of Industry; and his eleven great-grandchildren. Red is additionally survived by his brothers, Donald Long and his wife, Donna, and Paul Long and his wife, Linda, all of Franklin; and his sister, Wanda Ward of Carlton. He is also survived by his beloved dog, "Cricket". In addition to his parents, Red was preceded in death by his sisters, Betty Wilt and Bessie Duffee; and his brother, Dell Long. Family and friends of Red will be received at the Gardinier Funeral Home, Inc., 1315 Chestnut Street, Franklin on Thursday, October 13, 2011 from 9 to 11 a.m. Funeral Services for Red will be held at the Funeral Home at 11 a.m., immediately following visitation, with Rev. Steve Henry, pastor of Victory Heights United Brethren in Christ Church, officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by the V.E.T. S. Honor Guard. Interment will follow in Brandon Cemetery.
