The Rev. John E. Richards, 88, of 104 Beech Drive, Franklin, departed to be with the Lord at 6:23 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at UPMC Northwest. Born Jan. 25, 1920, in Hilliards, he was the son of William and Hannah Day Richards. After graduating from Geneva College, he joined the U.S. Navy in World War II. He served as a pharmacist's mate in the Pacific Theater. Mr. Richards graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary and served as Christian Education director of Scofield Memorial Church for 10 years. He pastored Fairview Evangelical Free Church in San Antonio for four years. He was executive director of Seneca Hills Bible Camp for 18 years, a part of that time also ministered Mt. Carmel Church. In retirement, he organized the Hilliards Meadow Enterprise and the Historical Center in Hilliards. He married Edith Shira on Aug. 25, 1949, and she survives. Also surviving are three children, John Richards and wife, Louise, of Bethesda, Md., Karen Richards of Franklin and Ann Krill and husband, Peter, of Plymouth Meeting; and one sister, Virginia Trageser of McMurray. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Clara Stover, Dorothy McKissick and Effina Davis; and three brothers, DeWitt, Harris and Thomas Richards. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Robert W. Gardinier Funeral Home in Franklin. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Rocky Grove Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Mark DeJeu of Rocky Grove Presbyterian Church officiating and assisted by the Rev. James Cossin of Seneca Hills Bible Camp, co-officiating. Interment will be held at Rosewood Cemetery. Memorials can be made to Seneca Hills Bible Camp, Box 288, Franklin, 16323.   1. I’m thinking of all of you. I used to attend Mount Carmel Church years ago when Rev. Richards and family were there. (I was Patty Snyder)

John was my boss at seneca hills for four years. he was compassionate, easy-going and fair. he always made me feel valued. he liked to talk about philosophy. he was always working on his communication skills. if my father could not walk me down the aisle at my wedding, i would have asked john.
