  1. I knew him as “Junior”, the shy little 12-year-old boy with long blond hair who lived next door to the house I had rented on the outskirts of Franklin. When I first moved in, he wouldn’t say a word to me but followed along as I took long walks in the 50 acres of woods behind our houses, part of the old Jung family farm. Eventually he came to trust me enough to share his thoughts and we developed a bond that we both cherished. He became like a little brother to me. I lived in that house for 3 years — from 1973 to 1976 — and watched Junior blossom into a popular and outgoing teenager. When I moved away, it was a sad moment for both of us. I remember giving him my Hallicrafters short-wave radio as a parting gift, hoping that maybe he would develop an interest in “ham” radio, as I had at his age. I can’t remember if I wrote to him after that but, if not, I wish I had.

Rest In Peace, beautiful soul. I will listen for you in the woods where the trees speak to us softly and the birds sing songs of eternal peace.
