James R. Ion James R. Ion, 66, of Oak Grove Circle, Franklin, passed away at 3:42 p.m. on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at UPMC Northwest in Seneca. Born on December 11, 1944 in Leeper, James was the son of the late Raymond and Dorothy Milford Ion. He was married to the former Joyce Bickel on August 19, 2005, and she survives. James was a United States Marine Vietnam Veteran having served from February 16, 1962 until January 23, 1968. While in the Marines, James was the recipient of a Good Conduct Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal, and a National Defense Service Medal. He worked as a machinist for Oil Well Supply, as a foundry worker for Franklin Bronze, and as a supervisor for Lepley's Bus Service. James was a very loving man who would do anything for anyone. He enjoyed spending time hunting and fishing, and especially enjoyed his yearly trips to Canada to hunt bear and fish. In addition to his wife, James is survived by his sons, James R. Ion, II and his wife, ShaMarie, and Kenneth D. Ion and his wife, Kim, all of Cooperstown; his step-son, Brian Cooley of Franklin; and his step-daughter, Emily R. Cooley-Young, and her husband, Gabriel Young, also of Franklin. He is also survived by his sister, Diane Ion, of Kane; and his seven grandchildren, Austin and William Ion of Franklin, his very special granddaughter, Tierney Phillips of Franklin, Lacy Jo Young and Tara, Katie and Erin Cooley, all of Franklin. James is also survived by his dogs, "Hud" and "Shadow". In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his brother, William Ion. A Memorial Service for James will be held at a later date at the convenience of his family. The Gardinier Funeral Home, Inc., 1315 Chestnut Street, Franklin has been entrusted with arrangements.
