  1. Patricia, Tonya and Jeremiah — my deepest sympathies on the death of your beloved Tom. My apologies for being unable to make the scheduled times for being at the funeral home — I have unbreakable commitments at each of those points. Please know I’ll always remember Tom as one of the bravest and most spiritual men I’ve known. He refused to let his struggles with MS mean the end of his enjoyment of life. It shocked me to think how quickly the Army ended his distinguished military career once he was diagnosed with the disease. It shocked me that he boldly entered the MS-150 bikeathon a year or so after learning he had MS, in order to do all he could to combat the disease that altered his life. And it shocked me at how quickly he went from bicycling to being wheelchair-bound. The disease advanced rapidly, but at every point Tom was determined to fight it and live life on his own terms. I’ve always valued his willingness to be a spokeman for “the cause” in our services at Emmanuel Church and those I did at Ford Chapel for the bikeathoners. I’ll long remember bending over to receive my “you-made-it” medal from Tom himself at the bikeathon’s end quite a few years in a row. And I’ll never forget the lesson he shared with so many that if he’d been offered an alternative, he wouldn’t have his life any other way, since being afflicted physically by MS brought him such rewards spiritually. We know how much he loved each of you. We know how much he loved the Lord. We know he’s in a better place — in peace, at rest, now whole. My prayers are with you. Rev. Tim, Emmanuel Church (333-1331)

  2. Patty, Tonya, Jerimiah and family. Truly a sad loss, but a good man with many memories. I definetely wanted to attend the viewing, but I am sick with Bronchitis and didn’t want to bring that to you. God Bless you all in your time of need, Tom was a GREAT MAN, he will be missed.

  3. Dear Patty,
Please except my condolences on Tom’s death. It was my pleasure to get to know Tom a little the last few years. I was so sorry to hear of his passing. He was a wonderful man.
You and yours are in my thoughts and prayers.

    Linda Jorinscay

  4. I graduated with Tom and saw him at the last reunion. He was a very special young man in school. He showed such class at the reunion. No one would ever feel sorry for him. He would not have allowed it. I am so sorry for your loss.

  5. My condolences again to the McDowell family. Tom was to me a very humble man who served his country proudly and was a wonderful family man. His list of accomplishments should embarass most Americans, myself included.
I consider myself lucky to have met Tom. He’ll be sorely missed.
