Bette Davenport of Meadville died Wednesday, April 14, 2010. Born in New Castle on Aug. 10, 1917, she was a daughter of Richard and Elva Barbara Fleming. She was married to F. Harper Davenport, who preceded her in death on April 2, 1984. Bette is survived by nine children: Three sons, Jon Tod (Marian) of Valentine, Neb., Jeffrey of Meadville and Joel (Cassie) of Carbondale, Colo.; and six daughters, Judy (John) Daly of Meadville, Bunny (John) McLaud of Skaneateles, N.Y., Jayne (Bill) Poss of Aspen, Colo., Susan (Marty) Karpenski of Florham Park, N.J., Jennifer Davenport of Santa Fe, Mexico, and Jill Davenport (Jim Goetz) of Bozeman, Mont.; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Bengal of Leesburg, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. Bette lived a full and vibrant life. She touched the hearts of many by her thoughtfulness, her positive attitude, her never-ending energy and her phenomenal memory. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Meadville Elks Lodge and West Mead 2. One of her favorite pastimes was playing cards with her dear friends. Living at the family fruit farm, she was surrounded by the beauty of nature, especially at apple blossom time. Bette was an avid reader and, combined with her love of children, she was a long-time "Grandma Reader" at Maplewood Elementary School. She had a special love for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her faithful and loyal companion, her dog, Mackie. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions may be made to Maplewood Elementary School Library, 32695 State Highway 408, Townville, Pa., 16360; and/or Crawford County Humane Society, 11012 Kennedy Hill Road, Meadville, Pa. 16335. Visitation hours will be held April 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Roofner-Collins Funeral Home, 544 Chestnut St., Meadville.
