ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Benny J. Nigro, 81, died on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, at Atlantic City Hospital in Atlantic City, N.J.He was born in Meadville Feb. 22, 1928, a son of the late Lorenzo and Bernarda Torretta Nigro.When living in Meadville, he had worked at various jobs including those at Erie Railroad, Talon Inc., American Viscose Co. and at Reick McJunkin Dairy Co.He graduated from Meadville High School in 1947 and from Penn State University in 1953. When he resided in Meadville he was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church. He had also been a member of the Italian Civic Club.While residing in Pleasantville, N.J., he was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, No. 4211. He was also a member of the American Legion.He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He served in the U.S. Army Occupation in Japan, and was assigned to General McArthur's headquarters, where he operated a taxi service in Tokyo for Allied Embassy personnel.Following college, he was employed with Westinghouse Air Arm Division at Baltimore-Washington Airport, as an expediter in its model shop for military prototypes, was employed as a civilian at Langley Air Force Base, Va., as an air operations specialist and retired from the U.S. government in 1987 from the Federal Aviation Administration Technical Center, as an airport operations specialist at Atlantic City International Airport, N.J.Surviving is a sister, Mary Farkus of Meadville; two brothers, John Nigro and his wife, Patricia, of Silver Springs, Md., and Francis Nigro of Arlington, Va. He is further survived by niece and nephews.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Theresa Nigro; and a brother, Joseph A. Nigro.The funeral will be at Roofner-Collins Funeral Home, 544 Chestnut St., Meadville, on Friday at 11 a.m., with Father Richard Toohey of St. Mary of Grace Church officiating. Entombment will take place at St. Brigid Cemetery.
