Thomas P. McCarthy, 87, of Lakeland Florida passed away on December 7, 2025.
Tom was formerly a resident of the Stoneboro/Sandy Lake area and Rocky Grove, Pa.
He was born on May 3, 1938 in Franklin to J. Paul and Geraldine (Freeman) McCarthy.
Tom graduated from Rocky Grove High School in 1956 where he was a four year varsity basketball player.
After graduation, Tom obtained a Bachelor’s and later a Master’s degree in Education from Slippery Rock University.
Tom started his teaching career at Rocky Grove, completing it at Lakeview after 19 years. Â He was the Social Studies instructor and varsity basketball coach at both institutions.
Upon retirement from teaching, Tom, along with his former wife, Judy, founded Tomax Inc. which included 8 Tobey’s Pizza shops, Papa Wheeley’s Skating Rink, a bowling alley and 2 bars.
Tom moved to Lakeland, Florida in 2000 to enjoy his full retirement.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Marjorie (McCarthy) Daley.
Tom is survived by his brothers, John and Larry; his daughter Bobbi; his son, Bret; his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
As per Tom’s wishes, no public services will be observed and arrangements are under the care of the Gardinier-Warren Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 1315 Chestnut Street, Franklin, PA 16323.
Tom’s resting place is at the Beth Cemetery in Oakland Twp, Franklin.
