John J. Merchbaker John J. Merchbaker, 74, of 11070 Liberty St., Meadville, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, at Meadville Medical Center. He was born May 23, 1935, in Meadville, the son of the late William and Sara Malia Merchbaker. He married Dianne Hoadley Jan. 20, 1961. She survives. He had been employed at the former Avtex Fibers Inc. for 27 years, then worked for the Crawford Central School District, retiring in 1997. He was a member of St. Brigid Church, Meadville.He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving with the 82nd Airborne during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006 of Meadville, the Meadville Club and Elks Lodge 219 of Meadville.He enjoyed hunting and fishing and Penn State football. Surviving is his wife, Dianne Merchbaker of Meadville; a daughter, Lynne Shiflett and her husband, Terry, of Brandon, Fla., a daughter, Beth Merchbaker of Cochranton, and a son, Doug Merchbaker and his wife, Chris, of Cochranton, and two grandchildren, D.J. and Joshua. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Roofner-Collins Funeral Home, 544 Chestnut St., Meadville, where a Vigil Prayer service will be held at 3:45 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Brigid Church, 383 Arch St., Meadville, with Fr. Mark O'Hern of the church as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Brigid Cemetery, West Mead Township, with full military honors by VFW Post 2006. The family suggests memorials be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
