MEADVILLE " Aldrich (Al) J. Borkovec, 74, of 240 Grandview Ave., Meadville, passed away Monday, Jan. 17, 2011, at Meadville Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, after a two-week stay, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Meadville on Sept. 6, 1936, he was a son of Aldrich M. and Jean M. Rudack Borkovec. He married Linda M. Houser on July 6, 1971. He was in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked at American Viscose and at Meadville Telephone Company as an installer, lineman and switchman. He enjoyed working outside and helping others. Al was very community-minded and always strived to make the Meadville area a better place to live for everyone. He was an extra in the movie “The Girl He Left Behind” with movie stars Tab Hunter, James Garner and Natalie Wood. He was a member of Meadville Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Meadville Fireman’s Board of Relief and a former member for 45 years of Dick Hose Co. He was a member of St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church, St. Agatha Men’s Club, and an usher and a funeral altar server at the church. His morning hangout was the downtown Meadville McDonald’s. Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Linda M. Borkovec of Meadville; four children, Michelle L. Fried and her husband, Andy, of Allentown, A.J. Borkovec Jr. and his wife, Shannon, of Spartansburg, Lynora J. Chrisolm and her husband, Joe, and Colleen M. Bortolo; 10 grandchildren; and a niece. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Ronald Blain Borkovec. Calling hours are today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Roofner-Collins-Warren Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 544 Chestnut St., Meadville. The funeral and committal services are today at 7 p.m. at the funeral home, with Father Raymond Gramata of St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church officiating. A service with full military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006 Color Guard will follow at the funeral home. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Meadville Volunteer Fire Department, 552 State St., Meadville, Pa. 16335.
